History of Senapati

History of Senapati The town of Senapati was named after Senapati Tikendrajit Singh who belonged to the Royal Family of the state of Manipur. Earlier, the Senapati district was known as Manipur North district.With effect from 14th November 1969, the district came into existence. Initially, the headquarter was located in Karong. Later on 13th December 1976, it was shifted to Senapati. From 15th July 1983, the district came to be known as Senapati district.

Geography of Senapati

The town of Senapati is bounded by Ukhrul District on the east, Tamenglong District on the west, Phek District of Nagaland on the north and on the south by Imphal East District and Imphal West District. The total area of the district is 3721 sq kms. The town is covered with green valleys, hill ranges, streams and rivers. The major peaks of the hill range located here include Houdu, Khouchi, Koubru, Pgapu and Isii (Iso). About 80% of the total area is covered by forest and the rest 20% is arable land.

Climate of Senapati

Senapati experience a humid sub tropical climate. The temperature varies from 35oC in summers to 3oC in winters. The average humidity of Senapati is maximum 92% and minimum 76%. The average rainfall here ranges from 671 mm to 1454 mm. Monsoon gere begins from the month of June to September. The major rivers of Senapati are Barak, Iril, Ithoi, Irang, Imphal and Lane.

Economy of Senapati

The main occupation of the people here is Agriculture. The major crops grown here include paddy, maize, cabbage, potato and cereals. People mostly practice Terrace cultivation here. Cattle rearing and animal husbandry are other occupations of the people here.

According to the 2011 census, the total population of Senapati district is 479, 14. The average literacy rate here is 75%. The major tribes inhabiting the town of Senapati include Maram, Mao, Thangal, Zemai, Poumai, Tangkhul, Chiru, Nepalese, Liangmai, Vaiphei, Maring and Chothe. The official language here is Manipuri. Besides Manipuri, Aimol, a Sino-Tibetan language is also spoken here. Christianity is the predominant religion of the district
